3rd Grade Art

North American Owls:

Third grade students looked at owls from North America. We talked about the different types of shapes we would need to know in order to draw these fine creatures. We also looked closely at detail on the owls feathers. Visual Texture was a big vocabulary word we heard a lot. The owls were watercolored and then feather detail was added with a fine tip marker. The trees were "barked" with oil pastels. We used packing peanuts to separate the layers to make the picture 3-D.

Abstract Flowers:

Third grade students learned the word...silhouette. We painted watercolor paper using analogous colors and talked about color blending. We drew abstract/futuristic flowers and colored in with Sharpie.

Mexican Sun Clay Bowls:

Third grade students studied Mexican Sun designs. We use various texture tools to make our own version of a Mexican Sun. Glazes of all colors appeared in these beautiful designs.

Tree Houses:

Third grade students talked about Wisconsin native architect Frank Loyd Wright. We used design to create our own tree house drawings and made them into a print. We went print crazy by using bubblewrap to make our skies more interesting. After putting our tree house into a tree with leaves we got to add all kinds of details. Some added swings, ladders, telescopes, pets, birds, and even a skunk.

Dandelion Dreams:

Third grade students traced their faces and hands using the help of a partner to create these unique silhouettes. We added dandelion flowers and used a salt watercolor backgound to make it appear like the dandelion fuzz was blowing in the sky.
